The Official Tour de France Story of two of the greatest French Champions The greatest French champions of the Tour de France were Bernard Hinault and Jacques Anquetil. This is their story. Born in 1934 in Normandy, Jacques Anquetil became the first five time winner of the Tour de France following his epic battle with Raymond Poulidor. Known as "Monsieur Chrono" for his ability to pedal with clockwork smoothness at a constant speed, Anquetil will always be remembered for his dominance of the early 1960's. Like Anquetil, Bernard Hinault also had a sensational record of five tour victories. Known as "The Badger" because of his reputation of not letting go of his prey, Hinault went onto match Anquetil's record in the Grand Boucle.
